Bunch of Founder's Day Creations!

Founder's Day is a great day to celebrate Guiding and Scouting

Happy Founder’s Day! Worldwide in nearly all Scout associations, Founders' Day is celebrated on February 22, the birthday of Robert Baden-Powell, 1st Baron Baden-Powell (born in 1857), the founder of Scouting, and coincidentally also of his wife Olave Baden-Powell (born in 1889). 22 February, the joint birthday of Robert and Olave Baden-Powell, continues to be marked as Founder's Day by Scouts and World Thinking Day by Guides to remember and celebrate the work of the Chief Scout and Chief Guide of the World. As Lord Robert Baden-Powell once said, “the real way to gain happiness is to give it to others.” On behalf of World Scouting, we wish you all a happy Founder's Day!

This is a wood burning project just finished on feb. 22, 2021 Birth Day of Scouting founder Robet baden powell. Pyrography or pyrogravure is the free handed art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks resulting from the controlled application of a heated object such as a poker. It is also known as pokerwork or wood burning. A large range of tones and shades can be achieved. Varying the type of tip used, the temperature, or the way the iron is applied to the material all create different effects. After the design is burned in, wooden objects are often coloured. Light-coloured hardwoods such as sycamore, basswood, beech and birch are most commonly used, as their fine grain is not obtrusive. However, other woods, such as maple, pine or oak, are also used.

Pyrography is also applied to leather items, using the same hot-iron technique. Leather lends itself to bold designs, and also allows very subtle shading to be achieved. Specialist vegetable-tanned leather must be used for pyrography (as modern tanning methods leave chemicals in the leather which are toxic when burned), typically in light colours for good contrast. Pyrography is also popular among gourd crafters and artists, where designs are burned onto the exterior of a dried hard-shell gourd.

Scouting's founder, Robert Baden-Powell, was a talented artist and enjoyed sketching and painting throughout his life. He supplied all the original drawings for his bestselling book 'Scouting for Boys' which provided inspiration for so many. Baden-Powell authored the first editions of the seminal work Scouting for Boys, which was an inspiration for the Scout Movement. Scouting’s founder, Robert Baden-Powell, was a talented artist and enjoyed sketching and painting throughout his life. He supplied all the original drawings for his bestselling book ‘Scouting for Boys’ which provided inspiration for so many. This pack contains a selection of the artwork held in The Scouts Heritage Collection. It sphows his enjoyment for capturing his environment whether it was whilst travelling, in the Army or in his role as Chief Scout. His sketches show a sense of humour and demonstrate his talent for engaging his audience in the subject.

Baden-Powell's father often sketched caricatures of those present at meetings, while his maternal grandmother was also artistic. Baden-Powell painted or sketched almost every day of his life. Most of his works have a humorous or informative character. His books are scattered with his pen-and-ink sketches, frequently whimsical. He did a large unknown number of pen-and-ink sketches; he always travelled with a sketchpad that he used frequently for pencil sketches and "cartoons" for later water-colour paintings. He also created a few sculptures. There is no catalogue of his works, many of which appear in his books, and twelve paintings hang in the British Scout Headquarters at Gilwell Park. In 1911 and 1912, he had fishing holidays in Norway.

22 February, we recall our Scouting adventures, meet our Scouting friends, proudly wear our scarves and celebrate the great diversity of our worldwide Movement. Today is also a time for us to renew our Scout Promise and our commitment to creating a better world.

We should be in no doubt that Baden-Powell would be very proud of us. We have been Growing Together for more than 111 years and, today, reach more than 50 million young people worldwide with an ambition to double that number by 2023. We certainly have plenty of reasons to celebrate.

The Founder believed Scouting helps young people by providing opportunities for them to look wide, beyond their own needs, to the wider needs of humanity itself. His thoughts are still relevant today. In a world facing burning challenges such as armed conflict, poverty, hunger, climate change and gender inequality, Scouting continues to provide a constructive response by empowering young people to actively contribute in finding solutions to these global challenges by taking action locally.

Scouts worldwide contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals through the simplest of actions: from preventing hunger through growing vegetable gardens, to alleviating street children from poverty through providing vocational training, to promoting gender equality and pledging support to the UN Women HeForShe campaign.

As we share this special day with our friends in Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting who are marking World Thinking Day, let us recommit to working together because by doing so, we can be a stronger force for young women and men everywhere.

Remember, you don’t have to do something big. Great things can start from the humblest of beginnings – just like our remarkable worldwide Movement.

On behalf of World Scouting I wish you all a happy Founder’s Day.

Commenting on resumption of outdoor camping by Colombo Scouts, the District Commissioner of Colombo Amil Abeysundara stated that “Given the COVID-19 pandemic situation that has been prevailing in the country since March 2020, we the Colombo Scouts had to think out of the box and innovate the concept of a Virtual Camporee which became a roaring success in 2020 when we organised the 55th Colombo Camporee."With the resumption of most day-to-day activities in the country, we decided to hold the 56th Colombo Camporee in a hybrid format, where Scouts were encouraged to camp outdoors at their homes or neighbourhood, individually or as small teams whilst joining some of the activities virtually. Further we have organised two events of the Camporee, namely the Camporee Youth Day and the CAMARADERIE - The Camporee Urban Hike open for external youth organisations, as urban hikes in the city of Colombo,” Abeysundara said.

Comic Legacy That we couldn't archive
